Crucial Reasons to Stay Motivated to Lose Weight

by Todd Hicks

Are you overweight and constantly out of breath? Do you often get sick or feel bad physically? Have you started a weight loss regimen to eliminate your physical burden but quit out of a lack of motivation? Becoming lighter should not be your only goal to lose weight. You will probably possess a higher desire to lose weight and stick to a plan that focuses on losing weight for good once you learn the bigger picture. You will learn the various reasons you should stay motivated to lose weight. Weight loss leads to better health. Obesity causes numerous diseases and cancers. If you eat foods that contain too much fat and cholesterol and you are too heavy, you will probably develop clogged arteries and consequently suffer heart disease or a heart attack. Stay motivated to lose weight to live a longer, healthier life.
Another reason you should stay motivated to lose weight is to have more energy. If you become slim and fit by eating properly and exercising regularly, you will be able to do physical activities and move around well for long periods of time because you will increase your blood flow, circulation, lung capacity and endurance.
You should stick with a weight loss plan to develop your self-esteem. Think about it. You will feel good about yourself and have pride when you become trim, fit and healthier.
Maintain a desire to lose weight to gain more strength. You will definitely become emotionally stronger as you shed pounds and you could become physically stronger too, especially if you incorporate strength training into your weight loss regimen.
If you lose enough weight, you might increase your pay or get a promotion. People who are considered attractive earn more money and consideration for a promotion than those who are not considered attractive.
You should stop eating too much to have fewer stomach aches. If you eat too much grease or fatty foods, you are likely to have an upset stomach and possibly experience the flu at least once or twice a year.
Stick with losing weight to move faster. Having too much weight will slow you down.
Picture yourself becoming a better athlete, especially if you are young. You will be able to play the sports you love better and maybe become good enough to become a well-paid professional athlete.
Avoid quitting your weight loss plan to find a mate if you are single. Many singles probably prefer a mate who is slim.
Continue to lose weight to inspire others. If you stick with your goal, you will probably encourage others to lose weight or do something else they want to accomplish.
Another reason you should stay motivated to lose weight is to draw praise. Others will congratulate you.
Keep all these benefits in mind to stay motivated to lose weight and live a more rewarding life!

Are You Fasting for Health or For Weight Loss?

by Aaron Patterson

Fasting has become increasingly popular as of late. There are a few health benefits to be gained from fasting, but often times I wonder if some people are fasting because they hope to lose weight. Fasting for health is fine, but fasting for weight loss is not such a great idea, for several reasons. Fasting for weight loss doesn't work as well as you'd hope. To begin with, many people don't realize that a large percentage of their daily water intake comes from solid foods, not liquids. (For example, an apple is 80% water by volume.) When you fast, by definition, you're eating little or no solid food. You can try to drink more water to compensate, but how do you really know how much more you need to drink?
You can probably see where this is going. If you're consuming less water, the first type of weight you'll lose during your fast... is water weight. And guess what happens when the fast ends? That water weight comes right back.
Even if you get your water intake right, you are fighting your body's natural inclinations if you fast for weight loss. Fasting causes the body's metabolism to slow down. The slower your metabolism, the harder it is to actually burn fat (or any calories you consume, for that matter). So while it's true that you can't really gain weight during a fast, it's pretty hard to lose it and keep it off, too.
Fasting for health is perfectly fine. But if your goal is weight loss, consider calorie shifting instead of fasting. Calorie shifting (sometimes called calorie cycling) is a unique dieting technique that varies the content and size of your meals in a manner that maximizes your metabolism. The result is that it becomes easier than ever to burn calories just by going about your regular, daily activities.
The most popular calorie shifting diet plan on the market is FatLoss4Idiots. When I posted a FatLoss4Idiots review to my dieting advice site, I almost immediately started receiving testimonials from people who have used this diet with success.

3 Breast Cancer Treatments Explained

by Tom Parker

Approximately 44,500 people contract breast cancer every year in the UK. It is not yet known what causes this condition but it develops when breast tissues become cancerous. This causes them to multiply in a rapid and uncontrolled way which leads to a tumour forming in the breast. Fortunately, there are treatment options available and in this article I will be discussing three of these.
  1) SURGERY:- There are two types main types of surgery that your doctor will recommend. The first is breast conservation which involves the removal of any lumps and the surrounding breast tissue. There may be mild scarring following this type of surgery but overall the appearance of the breast should be similar post surgery.
The second type of breast cancer surgery is masectomy which involves the removal of the whole breast. This surgery is generally recommend if breast conservation surgery does not successfully eliminate the cancer or if the tumour has become very large. After this type of surgery your doctor is likely to offer you breast reconstruction, a treatment allowing you to get back the shape of the original breast.

2) RADIOTHERAPY:- This type of treatment involves aiming high energy radiation beams at the breast cancer cells in an attempt to destroy them. It is normally used before surgery (to shrink the tumour) or after surgery (to reduce this risk of the cancer coming back). However, it may also be used as an alternative to surgery when the tumour is small enough.

3) HORMONE THERAPY:- Certain breast cancers are sensitive to the female hormones oestrogen and progesterone. Your doctor will be able to perform tests to see how these hormones affect the tumour. Based on these tests they may then recommend hormone therapy. This involves preventing oestrogen or progesterone from reaching the cancer cells either by using drugs or via surgery which stops the ovaries from producing these hormones.
Whilst breast cancer is not a condition that anyone would desire contracting this disease is not the end of the world. Treatment is a very real possibility. I hope this article has provided you with an introduction to some of these but to get a full picture you need to go and visit your doctor. They have professional knowledge and will be able to help you choose the treatment that is right for you.
Whilst every intention has been made to make this article accurate and informative, it is intended for general information only. Breast cancer is a very serious, life threatening condition and you should discuss any concerns, treatments or lifestyle changes fully with your doctor.

3 Interesting Facts About Ayurvedic Skin Care

Author: Ray A. Rubio

In this fast moving world, we often find it difficult to stand back and take good care of ourselves. However, we are obsessed with the idea of looking good. Ancient ayurveda, one of the oldest disciplines of medication, tells us that we can have good-looking skin only if our insides are pure and free from any kind of impurities. Thus, before you start external polishing, take an inward look, and go for ayurvedic skin care.

The blemishes, pimples, eruptions, or spots on your skin that irritate you are merely a result of certain lifestyle or diet disorders. If you can go for a skin friendly diet, you can ensure that you have great and healthy skin.

Always try to have food that is good for your body. Have meals that are light and healthy. Go for fruits and vegetables that make your insides clean and healthy. If you follow a healthy diet for some time, you will see the results yourself. The result will be healthy skin that looks young and fresh.

Given below are certain dietary tips that will help you get healthier skin:

1. For ayurvedic skin care, begin your day with a mug of hot water that has the juice of half a lemon. Lemon is very good for the skin and since it is anti bacterial, it helps your body to flush out the toxins and keep your body clean from within. In case you have very oily skin, you can go for another glass of lemon water later in the day. Those who have regularity problems can start the day with raisins that have been soaked in water overnight.

2. Herb tea is another thing that forms an important part of ayurvedic skin care. You can go for fennel, mint, aniseed, cardamom, rosehips or cinnamon tea about twice or thrice a day. The herbs that are very good for cleansing include neem, turmeric, Sarsaparilla, marshmallow root, and Indian madder. All these herbs are great for your body because they purify the blood and clean the toxins in your body.

3. Raw salads are also great for your health but you can reap the maximum benefit of eating raw food only when you have a strong digestive system. In case your system is not very strong, you will not be able to digest the raw food. For ayurvedic skin care, you need to consume vegetables that have high water content. Carrot, lettuce, daikon radish and tender asparagus are vegetables that are very good for your health and your skin. In Ayurvedic jargon, these vegetables are called tridoshic, which means that they are suitable for individuals with any kind of skin.

Another group of vegetables that is very good for your skin. These are cruciferous vegetables. However, you must have these vegetables only after you steam them because they are slightly difficult to digest. If you have vatta skin, avoid these vegetables. But if you have Pitta or Kapha skin, have steamed broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, and Brussels sprouts.

For complete ayurvedic skin care, avoid bad fats and oily food. For those who have dry skin, consumption of ghee is prescribed. If you follow these diet tips for ayurvedic skin care, you will see the difference in a few days when you get healthier skin.

Alternative Approaches to Mental Health Care

An alternative approach to mental health care that emphasizes the interrelationship between mind, body, and spirit can play an important role in recovery and healing. Although some people with mental health problems recover using alternative methods alone, most people combine them with other, more traditional treatments such as therapy and, perhaps, medication. It is crucial, however, to consult with your health care providers about the approaches you are using to achieve mental wellness.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is one of the alternative therapies that are getting a lot of attention for mental health. In this practice, your body is regarded as a system of energetic pathways. When one of these pathways is disrupted, it can cause mental health problems. When the acupuncturist identifies the blocked pathway, however, and then inserts a needle into the area, they can help to improve the energy movement, reducing the mental health symptoms. Though this was once dismissed as a false science, more studies are showing that these needle treatments do work - and they can work in the long term. You can find acupuncture practitioners in nearly every city by heading to your local phone book.
Exercise and Diet

While this may not be considered alternative, most people wouldn't think that lifestyle changes could contribute to their mental health. But it's true. Since your body is comprised of a vast number of systems that require the proper nutrition and blood flow in order to work properly, it stands to reason that taking on healthy habits will allow you to also improve the mental health of your body. Nerve cells that are well-nourished may be better able to stay balanced. An attempt to add thirty minutes of exercise to every day and eating a healthier diet is a great start.

Meditation

Used for centuries, the practice of meditation is still considered a great way to calm the mind and often still any mental health disorders. By sitting in a comfortable position and simply trying to clear the thoughts from your mind, people have noticed they feel more centered and serene. A person does not have to sit in a lotus position or even chant in order for this practice to work. Take about ten minutes a day to sit in a quiet place in your home (wearing headphones to drown out noises if you can't find peace and quiet) and simply let any thoughts that enter into the mind out again. Whenever you begin to think about something, just let it go and focus on your breathing. In time, you will have fewer and fewer thoughts, helping to relax your body as well as your mental issues.

Massage therapy: The underlying principle of this approach is that rubbing, kneading, brushing, and tapping a person's muscles can help release tension and pent emotions. It has been used to treat trauma-related depression and stress. A highly unregulated industry, certification for massage therapy varies widely from State to State. Some States have strict guidelines, while others have none.

Prayer

When you believe in something greater than yourself, research is shows that you might have a smaller chance of mental health issues. There seems to be something about recognizing the idea that you aren't in control of everything, so when you give that control to someone or something else through prayer, you can begin to find balance in life. By simply sitting down and praying each day, you can begin to establish your place in the world.

Music/Sound Therapy
It is no coincidence that many people turn on soothing music to relax or snazzy tunes to help feel upbeat. Research suggests that music stimulates the body's natural "feel good" chemicals (opiates and endorphins). This stimulation results in improved blood flow, blood pressure, pulse rate, breathing, and posture changes. Music or sound therapy has been used to treat disorders such as stress, grief, depression, schizophrenia, and autism in children, and to diagnose mental health needs.

Mental Relaxation and Your Mental Health

By Expert Author: Stephen Lau
View Summary | Submitted: 2007-10-23 | Word Count: 780 words
Stephen Lau
Relaxation is important to both physical and mental health. Mental relaxation benefits not just your mind but also your body.

Stress is part of life; it is almost impossible to avoid stress. In fact, attempting to avoid stress is enough to create stress. Stress is what you experience emotionally and internally in response to a given situation with which you are incapable of coping. However, stress, ironically enough, may also be beneficial in that it teaches you about how to handle difficult situations in life. Learning to deal with demands in life keeps your mentally healthy, just as exercise keeps you physically fit.

Stress is related to your feelings, which signal that "something is not in order." Stress, therefore, requires expression of these emotions in an appropriate way - in the form of mental relaxation.

Mental relaxation is possible only when you have a plan for a balanced lifestyle, including regular bedtime, even on weekends and holidays. The reason is that your body's biological clock plays an important role in regulating your sleep patterns, which are critical to your mental well-being. Plan your daily routine and pace your life.

Take full responsibility for you own stress. This is the key to managing stress in your life. Never say, "You give me stress!" Nobody gives you stress but yourself. You are responsible for your own feelings. Otherwise, you would be passing the responsibility to others - that does not work in real life.

Change your attitudes and perceptions of what you experience in your life. Events that happen to you remain the same, but your perceptions may vary. Change your attitudes and perceptions to change the way you think about your experiences. Learn to laugh at others as well as at yourself. According to studies, children laugh 40 to 50 times a day, and that is why they are happy; adults, on the other hand, laugh only 10 to 15 times at the most. Do not take life too seriously, develop and nurture a sense of humor, which is a component of mental relaxation.

Enhance your physical capabilities to cope with difficulties encountered. These capabilities include physical fitness, good nutrition, and deep sleep without sleeping aids.

Change the environment that gives you stress. If your job gives you stress, change the job or take a vacation to de-stress yourself, although this may be a passive way of dealing with your stress.

Life is full of problems. Understanding yourself and the things that trouble you most is an important step in solving your life's problems, thereby eliminating much of the stress. Your mental health is determined by the way you work with and relate to others. In other words, you may have behavioral problems that create stress for you at work and in relationships. Isolating yourself in order to avoid these behavioral problems only makes you more difficult to enjoy good mental health.

To deal with any behavioral problem, you must learn how to communicate easily and clearly with others. You must be a good listener. You must be assertive without being critical or aggressive. You must learn to trust others, and see the good, instead of the bad, in others.

Eliminating stress is not equivalent to producing mental relaxation. To help your mind relax, you need to give it "a break." When you are asleep, your mind remains very active and does not "rest." When you are awake, your mind is preoccupied with mostly past and future thoughts. Nearly all your thoughts, including your desires and fears, are based on either the past or the future. Your desires are no more than recollection of the past pleasure and hope of repeating them in the future. Fears are also memories of past pain, and your desire to avoid them in the future. To give your mind the rest it rightfully deserves, help your mind focus on the present moment. Meditation does just that: it enables your mind to focus only on the present moment to the exclusion of past and future thoughts.

In meditation, you focus on your breathing, noticing your inhalation and exhalation, directing your mind to the present, thereby shutting off wandering thoughts of the past and future. In meditation, you are essentially giving your mind a period of relaxation. There is no other way as effective as meditation in giving your mind total relaxation. Modern medicine is beginning to use meditation to cure mental disorders because it works at your subconscious level. In Buddhist meditation, you experience "nirvana" only through meditation, in which you empty your mind of impure thoughts to arrive at a mental state of enlightenment.

Meditation, in conjunction with self-effort in changing attitudes and lifestyle, provides the best mental relaxation for your mental health.

Natural Foot Care for Diabetics by Cheryl Beasley

Because of the disease diabetes, damage can be caused to blood vessels and nerves in the feet, then circulation may be impaired and infections can form on the feet without the person realising. This can ultimately cause major complications and even amputation. Diabetes also impairs the immune system so diabetics are more prone to infection. Those who suffer from the disease should have regular foot examinations by their doctor and should know whether or not they have nerve damage. To prevent and check whether there is injury to the feet you should get into a routine of checking and caring for your feet, this is especially important if you already have nerve or blood vessel damage or current foot problems. Here are twenty important natural tips for keeping your feet healthy: 1. Inspect your feet thoroughly every day. 2. Clean your feet daily in lukewarm water (test this with your hands) with a natural soap, dry them thoroughly to prevent fungal infection. 3. Protect your feet constantly by wearing well fitted, comfortable but sturdy shoes. 4. Never walk around without some kind of footwear to protect your feet. 5. Clean, dry cotton or wool socks are also a good way to protect your feet from pressure points and bacteria caused by sweat. 6. Always apply a little amount of a natural foot cream that contains antibacterial agents to the soles of your feet after bathing, avoiding the skin between the toes. Diabetics can find that the skin on their feet dries and cracks easily which can potentially leave them open to infection. 7. When cutting toenails always soak the feet in a good foot soak that has antibacterial properties in it to soften the nails and cleanse away any bacteria and grime from the nails. Remember to cut the nail straight across with a nail clipper, since curved nails are more likely to become ingrown. 8. Using a gentle natural foot scrub can smooth any small rough areas before they become a problem. 9. Exercise promotes good circulation so walk daily and don't sit in one spot for too long. An easy exercise is to make circle with your feet ten times in each direction, keeping your leg as still as possible. 10. Sitting with your feet elevated for 10 minutes will also help your circulation. 11. Regularly massage your feet, this will also stimulate the circulation. 12. If you do notice a sore or any type of infection, see your doctor for treatment. 13. Stop smoking. It's awful for the circulation and your health generally. 14. Have any bunions and corns removed by a professional to avoid infection 15. Regularly clean the shower with a natural cleaner and spray a little diluted tea tree oil around the drain. 16. To keep your feet warm in bed wear loose, comfortable cotton or wool socks. 17. Always make sure your feet are kept at a comfortable temperature, avoiding cold feet. 18. If you have any pain in your feet see a podiatrist or your doctor immediately. 19. Use foot powder. 20. Follow a healthy diet and lifestyle; this will help prevent problems and complications.

Calcium Plays an Important Role in the Way Our Body Functions

By Steve A Johnson
Growing up we probably all have been told at one time or another to drink our milk and to eat low fat dairy products. The reason we were told this is because our parents and caregivers knew that by consuming calcium rich foods our bodies would greatly benefit and our bones and teeth would be healthy and strong.
They were right as it is true calcium plays a crucial role in the development and maintenance of healthy bones and teeth. However, calcium not only helps to keep our bones and teeth strong and healthy it is a very important and essential nutrient for the entire body. Calcium also plays a very important part in keeping our heart muscles healthy, it helps to control and regulate our heart beat and it help our nerves function and assists with many other bodily functions.
Everybody needs calcium in their diets. Young children and teenagers need sufficient calcium in their diets so they can take full advantage of the calcium storage in their bones. As we age, we need to get sufficient dietary calcium to help us minimize the loss of calcium from our bones because the majority of the body's calcium, approximately ninety-nine percent, is stored in your bones. We also need an adequate amount of calcium in the body because the other one percent is stored in the rest of the body and is for all other bodily functions.
Some good sources of calcium are low fat dairy products, fruits, and fortified cereals and grains. However, due to processing and manufacturing the majority of the nutrients in the food we eat are depleted. So, it is sad to say, we really are not getting as much calcium from our diet as we think we are. It is safe to say that it makes a lot of sense to take calcium supplements along with eating a healthy diet to make sure that our bodies get what it needs.
Even though supplementation is a good idea you should know that not all calcium supplements are created equal. One such calcium supplement that is well absorbed by the body and is very beneficially all bodily functions is called coral calcium. But what is Coral Calcium? Simply put, Coral Calcium is just calcium. However, coral calcium benefits have an advantage over other types of calcium. Marine coral calcium has a wide range and optimal mix of major and trace minerals. It contains calcium, magnesium and trace minerals, and the ratios of these minerals match the human body's ratio perfectly.
Some forms of coral calcium supplements are inferior because some of the other vital nutrients have been lost since they have been baked by the sun for thousands of years. Marine grade coral calcium is harvested miles away from shore below sea level. All of the essential minerals are preserved by nature and made available by carefully removing them from the sea floor away from the live reefs as not to disturb them. Coral Calcium Supplements also contain over seventy other trace minerals and are essential to good health. Preferred Coral Calcium Plus contains nature's balance of 2 to 1 ratio of calcium to magnesium. Any form of land grade calcium does not have this ratio. Magnesium is critical for the absorption of calcium. Land grade or fossilized coral contains only about 1% magnesium.

Vitamin D to a healthy heart

Vitamin D - A Protector of the Heart
By Dr. Martha Castro, M.D.

We all know the benefits of vitamin D, don't we? We know that vitamin D is good to maintain an excellent bone strength, and now, the University of Michigan Medical School scientists have finished a medical research that link vitamin D to a healthy heart. The study reports that vitamin D protects the heart from heart failure and the cloistral in it makes the hypertrophy (excessive growth of cells) of the heart to actually slow down significantly.
Interesting, isn't it? They don't know yet, however, how exactly this happens, I mean, chemically, but this is only the beginning of more research so they can tell us in the near future exactly how much vitamin D we need to take a day in order to prevent a heart failure, especially amongst people who are at risk of developing cardiomegalia (big heart aka hypertrophy of the hear) like patients with high blood pressure and people who do sports daily, like cyclists, runners, swimmers, etc., since we do tend to have a big heart due to the intense heart beat we require in order to accomplish a well fit physical condition, so we can call ourselves athletes to compete in amateur or professional races or just for the fun of it.
The daily requirements of Vitamin D are 200 mgs a day up to the age of 50. After that, 500 mgs a day are needed.
We can get the most vitamin D from:
1) Sun rays
2) A proper diet rich in vitamin D
3) A daily vitamin supplement of 500 mgs of vitamin D

I have been enjoying the beautiful sport of cycling for 9 years already. I am 46 years old and very well fit. I am short, 5.2 mts, but you know what they say: "Good perfume comes in small bottles".
